The Unbearable Untruth of Body Dysmorphia Disorder
Body Dysmorphia disorder is described as people thinking they have defects or flaws in their appearance, not noticed by others. 50% of people in the United Kingdom are thought to be affected by Body Dysmorphic Disorder, with an almost 50/50 split between male and female sufferers.
As well as anxiety and self-conscious, they often feel defined by their perceived flaws. Tragically, 1 in 330 people diagnosed with Body Dysmorphic Disorder commit suicide each year. The low self-esteem of people with BDD can lead them to toxic relationships.
What a person with BDD sees when they look in the mirror is not what we see when we look at them. There’s nothing you can consciously say to someone with BDD to the contrary about how they feel about themselves, even when they realise that their level of self-consciousness about their appearance doesn’t feel normal.
Feelings of disgust, loathing, and acute embarrassment are part of every day life for a person with BDD. Going out socially, including family gatherings are an ordeal. One lady told me she planned to down a bottle of vodka to be able to attend a family funeral she couldn’t duck out of. Others resort to harmful coping strategies like diet pills, compulsive plastic surgery and self harming.
If 1 out of 2 of us is affected by Body Dysmorphic Disorder, that means there’s a good chance you know someone. Dismissing their concerns about their appearance does not make the problem go away. Rather, why not get them to contact me for an initial complimentary consultation where we can take that first step to unconscious acceptance that leads them to the conscious gift of being able to love themselves.
The complimentary strategy session, tailored to each individual’s unique circumstances can either be at my practice in Streatham Hill, South London, or via Skype. Improvements in outlook and self acceptance can occur within a matter of weeks, even after decades of self-reproach.
There’s someone in your life that can be the life and soul of the party, rather than a self-imposed recluse. Contact me as soon as possible to change things around.
