Havening Techniques is being heralded as a new way of healing and was introduced to the United Kingdom in May 2013. This innovative approach to healing is the brain child of Ronald Ruden, MD, PhD, who has spent the last decade developing it in collaboration with his twin brother, Steven Ruden, DDS.
The belief behind Havening is that following an event or experience that is perceived as traumatic or extremely stressful, it becomes immutably encoded within the psyche and the body. This often leads to life altering consequences that may manifest immediately, not long after, or even many years after the event.
Havening Techniques makes changes in the brain in order to de-code or de-traumatise and remove permanently, from both the psyche and the body, both the emotional memory of the trauma or stress event and its negative effects. This is also known as amygdala depotentiation techniques (ADT).
Havening Techniques fall under the psycho-sensory therapies and is based on neuroscience and neurobiology. The protocol of Havening Techniques includes simple distraction techniques and human touch as a therapy tool known as the Havening Touch. The touch may be administered by the therapist or self-applied by the recipient, which is known as self-havening. Either way, the Havening touch combined with the distraction technique alters thought, mood and behaviour.
Havening Touch is effective on all ages, from the womb, where 3D images during pregancy have shown the foetus self-havening by stroking its face when the mother is subjected to stress, to babies, toddlers, teenagers, and adults. Havening is also safe for pregnant women.
