A fear of dogs really can make you feel like a prisoner in your own home. The clinical terminology for this phobia is Cynophobia and it is one of the top 20 phobias in the world. Ironic when you consider that dogs are known as man’s best friend. But for someone with a phobia of dogs, a dog is, psychologically, their worst enemy.
If you’ve been looking online for dog phobia therapy to cure you of your fear of dogs, you may ant to consider hypnotherapy to help you treat the root cause behind the phobia.
For me, growing up as a young girl in Birmingham, our neighbours, had dogs that would hurl themselves against the fence, snarling and barking if we went past the dividing alleyway that. I remember my heart thumping in my mouth and being paralysed with fear, dragged by my father, my little feet leaving grooves in the soil in our wake. As a child, I wouldn’t go into the garden alone. Such a pity!
As I grew older, dogs seemed to make a bee-line for me. It was as if they knew! I read somewhere they could smell fear. “That’s it,” I thought. “I’m doomed,” If dogs had a newsletter, I’m sure there was a feature spread article about me, pin-pointing me as an easy target. Even poodles would take a nip out of my ankle if I didn’t pay attention!
I learnt to contain my panic and growing up, we had a succession of dogs as pets. Indispensable and valued members of the house-hold. I then overcame my fear of other people’s dogs. But I’ll always remember the things I wouldn’t do, places I wouldn’t go to, because there was always the fear that a dog or dogs could be there. I’m still a little cautious around dogs I meet for the first time, but not about to run away in a panic.
As a hypnotherapist, I’ve spoken to people that admit that the most extreme course of action for escape seems logical in those moments of panic when faced by your nemesis. Parents and grandparents are consumed with guilt because a walk in the park, or a trip to the beach is out of the question, for fear of a dog encounter.
How can I help you? If you think it would be nice to
be able to go outdoors without having to worry about where the next dog sighting may be; to not jump out of your skin if a dog starts barking; or fancy the simple pleasure of a day out in the park with your children, then do get in touch and start living life to the full, with your dog phobia cured forever.
